Avoiding preventable injuries at the workplace

Colorado employees may benefit from learning more about different strategies for avoiding injuries at the workplace. Workers in the retail sector may be able to avoid musculoskeletal injuries by employing a variety of ergonomic techniques or solutions while completing tasks on the job. Employees may be able to avoid suffering sprains and strains at work by using devices to transport and lift heavier cargo from the shipping trucks into the sales floor.

Employees may be able improve productivity and reduce injuries by understanding that musculoskeletal injuries are often due to time away from work. These types of injuries are most prevalent in the retail and wholesale industries. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has published literature citing strategies and technologies that can help workers lighten their loads while completing routine tasks. According to the agency, there are several factors that can be instrumental in reducing the number of injuries suffered at the workplace.

The first efforts towards reducing the rate of workplace injuries may be to review the OSHA logs and the appropriate NIOSH checklists, as well as to confer with employees and assess the tools on-site. After the review is complete, employers are advised to begin prioritizing the tasks that need the most safety improvements. The frequency and severity of the complaints and risk factors associated with the tasks should help determine which agendas are of the highest priority.

Employees who suffer a workplace injury due to substandard safety protocols may benefit from consulting legal counsel. Obtaining legal representation may help injured workers recover wage benefits and insurance coverage for medical treatment under state workers' compensation laws.
