Good lighting essential for worker safety

Colorado residents who work in construction or other industrial professions know how important it is to have a good flashlight or lantern to illuminate their way in low-light areas. Luckily, advances in lighting technology mean employers and employees have a wide range of options available to ensure safety and efficiency on job sites.

On construction sites, LED technology now allows for high lumen lights that are as powerful as floodlights. This means that the entire work site can be illuminated, and potentially dangerous areas can be safely viewed from a distance. For tight spaces, portable lights with narrow footprints, telescoping poles and rotating heads are now available. These lights also have stabilizing legs so that workers can easily set them up on rugged terrain.

Another helpful innovation is the USB-rechargeable flashlight, which can be plugged into a USB port, an AC wall adaptor or a USB-compatible vehicle charger. Other personal lights like headlamps are becoming increasingly lightweight and can be easily customized to a variety of hard hats and helmets. They also offer many hands-free options that allow workers to focus on their job instead of juggling with a lamp. Finally, more manufacturers are making Division I safety-rated lights that are designed for use in flammable environments. These lights are essential for people working inside areas like oil or gas tanks.

Colorado employees who have been injured on the job due to poor lighting or other safety issues may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. These benefits cover medical expenses and a portion of a worker's salary as they recover from an injury. Some people find it helpful to work with an attorney as they prepare their claim to ensure all needed documentation is included and all deadlines are met.
