With summer in full swing now, much is often heard about the dangers of drunk driving in Colorado, especially over long holiday weekends. However, it is important for Colorado residents to remember that the dangers associated with driving after drinking alcohol exist beyond just Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. The family members of one particular Colorado State Trooper know this all too well.
In November 2015, the officer was working along a street of Interstate 25 in Castle Rock. Some reports had come in indicating that the driver of a particular vehicle may be impaired given how he was operating his truck. In response, the officer attempted to stop the driver. The driver did not stop. What happened instead was tragic. The driver hit the officer who was on foot at the time, killing her. The driver then proceeded to keep on driving.
The man was eventually found guilty of two felony charges, one of which was vehicular homicide while driving under the influence. His blood alcohol level was just under 0.20 percent, far beyond the legal limit for intoxication. He has now been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment with at least five years of parole that must be served.
People who lose loved ones like this know a pain beyond what words can describe. While nothing can bring a loved one back, talking to an attorney may provide insight into options for compensation.
