Protecting yourself from negligent drivers

You've heard it a thousand times. People drive like maniacs here. That makes for a lot of unsafe drivers out on the road. And many of them are driving illegally: Colorado is consistently ranked among the top 10 for uninsured motorists. You could easily be a victim of their unfair decision to break the law.

How bad is it?

According to the Denver Post, there were nearly 5,500 hit-and-run cases reported in 2015. That averages out to about 15 per day, ranging from simple door dings to more serious vehicular homicides.

Given these statistics, you would think that more Colorado motorists would continue their insurance coverage after the required purchase at registration. Sadly, it turns out that many of them cancel their policies shortly after buying them, even though minimum coverage is mandated by law and tracked by a third party company contracted by the state.

What can you do?

First and foremost, advisors recommend the purchase of uninsured motorist insurance, which consists of injury coverage and coverage to your vehicle. Second, you may want to purchase additional coverage for underinsured drivers who may be at fault if you get in an accident. Do not let your policy lapse.

In the event that you were in an accident with one of Colorado's 600,000 uninsured motorists, you will likely want to hire an attorney to help make you "whole" again. That means that without someone to represent you, it may be extremely difficult to recover damages from missing work, being hospitalized or fixing your car.

And, if the other driver isn't clearly at fault in the accident, you'll want representation as well. Without it, they could still try to claim that the accident is your fault, regardless of whether they were driving illegally.
