Denver’s Most Dangerous Intersections

Oftentimes, drivers assume that the most dangerous place to be on the roads is on the highways — where speed limits are higher and drivers can be easily distracted or tempted to drive recklessly. The fact of the matter is, however, that some of the most dangerous spots on the roads in Denver is not along the busy highways, but actually in the intersections. Despite the fact that traffic is moving slower and drivers are expecting traffic lights to change frequently, these intersections are where many of the most serious motor vehicle accidents occur.

The Top 5 Most Dangerous Intersections In Denver

  1. North Speer Boulevard and West 8th Avenue — In a two-year period, there were nearly 50 motor vehicle accidents at this intersection, which involves two roadways that have multiple lanes of traffic moving at once.
  2. West Alameda Avenue and South Federal Boulevard — In 2016 alone, there was more than 30 accidents at this intersection, with more than 60 taking place in a two-year span.
  3. North Kalamath Street and West 6th Avenue — This intersection also had nearly 50 crashes in a two-year time period, and is often considered to be equally dangerous to West Alameda Avenue and South Federal Boulevard.
  4. South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue — At this intersection, South Federal Boulevard is a divided highway that is prone to heavy traffic patterns. Within two years, there were 52 accidents at this site.
  5. West Alameda Avenue and South Sante Fe Drive — There were also 52 accidents at this intersection during a two-year period, making it equally dangerous to some of the other intersections featured in the list.

Tips For Driving Safely In Dangerous Areas

Perhaps one of the reasons that intersections do become so dangerous is because drivers can easily be complacent while traversing through them. Drivers often consider intersections the perfect place to check a quick text, to reach for their snack or to have a phone conversation. A quick distraction can lead to a decision that has deadly consequences. A driver who misses a light turning red could sail right through the intersection, while a driver who is going too fast might decide to speed up rather than slow down when the light turns yellow. Even at low speeds, these collisions can lead to serious injuries and even tragic fatalities.

These tips can help drivers maneuver safely through all intersections in Denver, even the ones with the most accidents:

  • Always approach an intersection slowly. Remain alert and pay attention to signage that indicates which lane you should be in.
  • Eliminate distractions while driving. Do not text and drive, avoid having phone conversations and try not to switch radio stations while the car is in motion.
  • Use your turn signal at intersections so that other drivers are aware of your intentions.
  • Prior to crossing through the intersection, look at all other cross streets and verify that no other cars are approaching the intersection. By staying aware and alert, you will be able to avoid potential collisions.
