Injured as a pedestrian in a car accident?

When most people talk about the causes of car accidents involving pedestrians, they focus on distracted driving. In Denver and throughout Colorado, there are plenty of distractions that pull a driver's attention away from the road. Talking on the phone, texting, adjusting the radio, attending to a child in the backseat, or talking with a passenger can be that single distraction that results in a crash with someone crossing the street or a bicyclist riding along the side of the road.

It's easy to focus on distracted drivers, but what about pedestrians? Sure, motorists should be vigilant, but do pedestrians have the same responsibilities as drivers when it comes to safely entering crosswalks, walking across the street or through parking lots?

Pedestrian-motorist safety is a two-way street

Most people know that motorists need to yield to pedestrians and observe other right-of-way laws. However, pedestrians should exercise caution when entering crosswalks or whenever in close proximity to motor vehicles.

Below are a few things to consider regarding pedestrian safety:

  • If you're not crossing the street in a designated crosswalk, you need to yield to cars on the roadway.
  • Although you have the right-of-way in a crosswalk, it's important to enter the crosswalk carefully and make sure motorists see you.
  • You shouldn't run, jump or lunge into a crosswalk or into the street. Even if you have the right-of-way, it's smart to check your surroundings and make sure oncoming vehicles have stopped or slowed to allow you to cross.
  • You shouldn't try to "beat" a crosswalk signal. If the signal prohibits you from crossing, wait, don't try to rush across to save a few seconds.
  • At intersections, don't cross diagonally. Stay within the parameters of the crosswalk.
