Are pedestrian accidents a problem in Colorado?

As spring returns to Colorado, you may well find yourself out walking and enjoying the outdoors more than during the colder, darker winter months. You are not alone in this as many people all around the state are doing the same thing. While there is much joy and benefit to your health to be had in being outside and being active, there are also risks when you share the road with cars, trucks, SUVs and other vehicles. Pedestrians must be ever vigilant in protecting their safety whether in crosswalks, on sidewalks or even in parking lots.

Just how many people are impacted by pedestrian accidents each year in Colorado? Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives us a view into this. Statewide, the number of pedestrian fatalities between 2010 and 2014 ranged from 36 to 76 each year. The year-by-year breakdown is as follows:

  • 36 pedestrians died in 2010.
  • 65 people on foot lost their lives in 2011.
  • In 2012, there were 76 pedestrian fatalities.
  • 2013 brought 50 pedestrian deaths to Colorado.
  • In 2014, another 63 pedestrians died.

In Denver County, between eight and 18 pedestrian deaths were recorded each of these five years. The last three of these years saw the most number of pedestrians die in Denver County with 18, 14 and 13 in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively.

In addition to people on foot, bicyclist deaths are also a concern in the state. Over the five-year span from 2010 to 2014, 51 bicyclists died across the state. Of those fatalities, eight occurred in Denver County.
