With summer just around the corner, many Colorado residents are eagerly looking forward to road trip vacations and long summer weekend getaways. The joy that these journeys provide can sadly be marred by the dangers people face on the roads. Drunk drivers, distracted drivers and more can cause serious accidents that involve innocent people. Many such crashes can be caused by drivers operating semi-trucks and other large commercial vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Colorado experiences multiple traffic fatalities every year in large truck collisions. Specific data for the years 2010 to 2014 shows the following:
- In 2014, 488 people died in vehicular accidents in Colorado; 63 of those died in large truck accidents.
- In 2013, there were 482 total motor vehicle accident deaths and 56 large truck deaths.
- In 2012, 474 total accident fatalities were recorded, 58 of which involved large trucks.
- In 2011, 51 out of 447 deaths results from accidents involving large trucks.
- In 2010, there were 450 fatalities in total and 49 truck accident fatalities.
The number of total automotive deaths has risen annually during this five-year period and, except for one small dip between 2012 and 2013, so have truck accident deaths.
The causes of large truck collisions can be varied with truck driver fatigue being one issue of great concern. This is believed to be the reason for a recent crash along Interstate 76 that sent two truckers and one motorist to the hospital. CBS Denver reports that an investigation into the crash has been launched to identify if one of the truckers violated any rules about breaks and driving time.
