For Colorado residents, the need to feel safe when on the road is important. Too often, however, this need is sadly unmet. Tragic accidents can and do happen, often caused by the sheer negligence of drivers. When these drivers are operating extremely large vehicles like tractor trailers, the level of horror at the outcomes can be unbearable for those involved or left behind to grieve.
Today, extended family, friends and others are left to suffer the loss of an entire family on a stretch of Interstate 80 in the western part of Nebraska. A mother and father were driving in their minivan with their preschooler, toddler and infant when they were hit by a semi truck reported to have been travelling at an excessive speed. The impact caused the minivan to push into the vehicle in front of it. In the end, the chain reaction included a total of five vehicles.
Reports indicate that the trucker was distracted although no details are known about what may have caused the distraction. Whether or not alcohol or other substances were involved also remains unknown at this point. Another person is said to have been injured, potentially fatally but was on life support. The family that died was headed to Colorado to prepare for some upcoming mission work.
