Cell phone company promotes distracted driving awareness

Most Colorado residents have no doubt noticed that getting people to stop using their phones while driving is a challenge. Despite a growing pool of information that points to the facts about just how dangerous texting and driving is, drivers continue to do so every day. There are also many other forms of distracted driving that put innocent Coloradoans at risk every day.

One of the nation's major cell phone providers and retailers, AT&T, is committed to increasing awareness of the dangers of distracted driving in an effort to improve safety and reduce the instances of people driving while using their phones. Between now and the end of the year, the company is seeking at least 16 million people to participate in the effort called the 16 in 16 Challenge.

To participate, people need to simply register a team name and initiate a text that then acts as their pledge to not text and drive. The texts and formations of teams are ways of spreading the word and getting more people involved. At the end of the challenge, a winner can be declared and that winner may have the option to choose a distracted driving charity to receive a $5,000 contribution from the company. Another challenge encourages driver to put their phones completely away while driving for 21 consecutive days.

Anyone in Colorado who is involved in an accident caused by a distracted driver might want to contact an attorney. This may provide insight into opportunities to seek compensation.
