Workers' compensation is for injured office workers, too

Based on what we hear, it  is easy to assume that only factory workers and construction professionals get injured on the job. Statistically, though, administrative professionals suffer a very high number of injuries and file for workers' compensation.

Common injuries in office settings

According to the Society for Human Resources, these are a few of the most common injuries that occur in office workplaces. Employees who experience these injuries or health issues as a result of workplace conditions may be eligible for workers' compensation.

  • Slip-and-fall accidents -- Slip and fall accidents can be quite common in the office, as there are several hazards that are present in most office settings. Wet floors, particularly at the entrance of the building or in the bathrooms, are typically the culprit in slip and fall accidents in the office. In addition, exposed cords, misplaced rugs, and general obstacles in the office may pose a risk for slip and fall accidents. Beyond the indoor hazards, employers also must be sure to make sure the exterior of their buildings are clear of hazards. Ice, snow and rain can make parking lots and sidewalks hazardous, and they must be kept clear in the event of inclement weather.
  • Complications as a result of eye strain -- Today's office workers have to spend the majority of their day working on devices. Whether they use desktop computers, tablets or smart phones, they often have to strain their eyes in order to read the screen and focus on their work for more than eight hours each day.
  • Health conditions that result from poor indoor air quality -- If not maintained, office ventilation systems can result in poor indoor air quality. Office workers spend the majority of their day inside, and overexposure to poor indoor air can lead to severe allergies, asthma, and upper respiratory issues. A person who suffers from occupational asthma or allergies and is unable to complete their daily tasks may be eligible for workers' compensation.
  • Ergonomic injuries -- Ergonomic injuries are by far the most common office injuries that occur each year. These injures can actually be quite severe and debilitating, and can result in chronic pain, muscle weakness, excessive fatigue or numbness in the limbs. Office professionals should have access to ergonomic products, such as keyboards, chairs and desks. They also should be encouraged to take breaks from sitting and working all day, as this can complicate ergonomic issues.

What should administrative professionals do in the event of a work-related injury?

Administrative professionals should recognize that they are still eligible for workers' compensation in the event of a health condition or injury that prevents them from working. If you feel that you are suffering from an illness or chronic health issue as a result of the conditions of your job, then you should work with a workers' compensation attorney in order to file for the claim that you deserve. You also need to partner with a qualified attorney if you have been injured on the job.

Workers' compensation can provide you with the supplementary income that you need during the time that you are unable to fulfill your job responsibilities. You should receive compensation that covers the health care costs associated with your injury, as well as the wages that are lost while you are off of work. An experienced attorney can work with you in order to make sure that you get the compensation that you need during this challenging time in your career.
