People in Colorado have been hearing about distracted driving for some time now. However, in the last few years, this topic seems to have been getting even more attention. More and more is being learned about the true dangers of using a phone or other device while operating a motor vehicle. In fact, true distracted driving can include a lot more than just the use of electronic devices while driving.
Despite knowledge that texting while driving is dangerous, many people continue to do this. However, a new law looks as though it may soon be signed into law by the Governor and that law could dramatically increase the penalties that distracted drivers face. SB 27 first passed the State Senate and more recently the State House of Representatives.
If the Governor signs it, the number of points added to a driver's record for a distracted driving citation would quadruple. At the same time, the financial penalty would increase by six times. Currently distracted driving may add one point to a record with a ticket cost of $50. The new law would increase the points on a driver's record to four and the fine to $300. Officers would be required to indicate how a driver was operating impudently or carelessly.
