Correlation between uninsured drivers and increased risk

Every driver is subject to risk of property damage or personal injury on the road. Most drivers, however, can secure a degree of protection from the economic effects of damage by obtaining adequate insurance coverage. Uninsured and underinsured motorist polices cover individuals whose injuries are caused by a driver with no insurance or whose insurance is insufficient to cover damages. While UIM insurance is not required by Colorado law, it may be especially important for Coloradans considering the high number of uninsured drivers on the road.

It has been reported by the Denver Post that uninsured drivers account for about 16 percent of all drivers in Colorado. Furthermore, there appears to be a correlation between accidents involving uninsured drivers and an increase in the severity and frequency of bodily injury. There may also be a link between uninsured drivers and the number of incidents involving a hit-and-run. An estimated 15 hit-and-run accidents occur each day.

Traffic fatalities in Colorado increased in 2016, according to a report by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The increase marks an almost 25 percent rise since 2014. In its statement, CDOT emphasized that individuals who did not wear seatbelts represented about 50 percent of the deaths; about one-third of accidents involved the use of alcohol; and fatal motorcycle accidents reached “an all-time record high.” While CDOT is making efforts to improve Colorado roads, much of the responsibility for safety rests upon individual drivers and vehicle occupants. In order to avoid future accidents, CDOT recommends individuals avoid distraction, impairment and speeding while driving.
