Across the state of Colorado, people were anxiously awaiting the Fourth of July holiday which for many people may have featured an extended weekend starting the Friday prior. Known to be a holiday during which a lot of folks take to the road, there may understandably be concerns about traffic accidents that could end up marring what should otherwise be a fun and enjoyable time.
Sadly this is exactly what happened for one family when they were not only rear-ended but sandwiched between other vehicles along a stretch of Interstate 76 near Iliff. The incident occurred on the Friday that kicked off the long holiday weekend. Four people and two dogs were in a sport utility vehicle that was waiting on the freeway due to a spill cleanup that was in process. While they waited, a man driving a pickup truck came up behind them and failed to stop in time and rammed into their vehicle pushing them into the vehicle in front of them.
The two dogs died in the accident and the three passengers were all taken to hospitals. The 50-year-old woman and 18-year-old man survived but are said to have been seriously injured. The 56-year-old man ended up dying from his injuries. The driver of the third vehicle in the front position experienced minor injuries but no other injuries are noted at this point.
