As most Coloradans know, it is unlawful to drive without having motor vehicle insurance. However, many drivers make the choice to risk driving without insurance for several reasons. They may believe insurance is too expensive or that they are safe drivers, and nothing will happen. However, being a safe driver does not prevent accidents, and it can be more costly to get caught without insurance.
Insurance is necessary to cover the financial damages, including medical expenses, of those in auto accidents. According to NerdWallet, the unpleasant consequences of being in an accident or getting pulled over without insurance can include the following:
- An expensive ticket by law enforcement after either a traffic stop or an accident
- Being sued by those who were injured in an accident that was the uninsured driver’s fault
- Having to pay for the other party’s property damage out of pocket
The penalties for not having car insurance in Colorado are particularly severe. As the Consumer Federation of America explains, a first offense includes a fine of $500 or more, license suspension and possible community service of at least 40 hours. For subsequent offenses within five years, those without insurance will have to pay a fine of at least $1,000 and may face jail time. Additionally, getting ticketed or in an accident without insurance can result in significantly increased insurance premiums, which drivers will be required to pay if they want to continue driving.
Car insurance can cost more than people are willing to pay. However, they may keep in mind that the consequences may be more than they can afford.
