Despite the fact that Colorado has laws in place in the require motorists to carry a certain amount in insurance coverage, many still drive without it, or carry only a bare minimum in coverage that may not offer enough in terms of compensation to cover the full amount of accident injury or damage expenses. If you drive in Colorado, then you may want to give extra consideration to including uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage in your auto insurance policy.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage offers financial protection in the event that the driver that caused your accident does not have adequate insurance to cover your accident-related expenses. Some states require that you carry this form of overage. However, according to the Insurance Information Institute, Colorado is not one of them. Given that it is not required, you may view this extra expense as unnecessary.
The number of uninsured or underinsured motorists in Colorado might convince you otherwise. The III also reports that the state ranks among the top 10 in terms of number of uninsured drivers. You should remember, though, that you are not without legal recourse when dealing with an uninsured driver. You can take the driver to court and sue for compensation for your injuries and/or damage to your vehicle. Such compensation may likely be drawn from the driver’s current or future personal assets, through either the liquidation of property or a wage garnishment.
