If you are like many Colorado residents, you may often wonder just what types and how much automobile insurance you really need. To some extent, your insurance requirements can be influenced by your personal financial situation and your ability to pay for damages or medical costs if an accident happens. There are also laws that mandate certain levels of coverage that you must carry at a minimum. Just what are these requirements?
According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, there are actually only two types of vehicle insurance that you must legally carry. One of these is coverage that would provide payment for damage to any property in an accident caused by you. This may include a person's home, garage, vehicle and more. Colorado mandates a minimum of $15,000 coverage be purchased with your policy.
The other required type of auto insurance coverage is to provide payment in the event that a person is injured or dies in an accident. In Colorado, you must have enough insurance to pay up to $25,000 for injury or death to a single person in a single accident of up to $50,000 for injuries or deaths involving multiple people in a single accident.
You are not required to have insurance covering you in case you are hit by a driver who lacks insurance altogether or who does not have enough insurance to properly compensate you. However, you do have the option to purchase uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance.
